1974 Series 3 Land Rover Lightweight 24v FFR (Fitted For Radio). Original military plate 32 GB 05 (painted on the bonnet, Jeep style). The military Air Portable version based on the Series 3 Land Rover built to MOD specification. MOT: 06/08/2019 1 Advisory: Nearside Front Outer (swivel hub slight oil leak).

I have a new swivel seal and a swivel housing gaitor in the box of spares. I intended to sell it last year, but never placed the ad in the end. I have not taken on the road since returning from the MOT, but I have charged the batteries, run the engine and checked the fluid levels on the drive.

I have owned this vehicle for 10 years, have only kept it in my garage and have only used it to show at military vehicle events. I have had it exclusively maintained by an independent ex-Land Rover mechanic.

This vehicle was previously fully restored prior to me purchasing it (I bought the best one I could find at the time as I didnt want a project and know I havent got the mechanics skills to maintain it properly). I have met the guy who restored it and have a lot of original photos of the re-build which I can pass on. The rear cross-member has been professionally replaced.

Its in very original military condition and it has often been praised at shows for its originality and condition. I would suggest it for showing more than any other use.

Some of the photos are a few years old, the ones on the drive, the close ups of the important bits and the pile of spares, are current. The radio gear has been removed and it now has two rear bench seats replicating the GS (General Service) version. The under wing tool box is included but not fitted.

There is some evidence it may have been used in Northern Ireland with The Royal Anglian Regiment as there are mounting points for a VPK (Vehicle Protection Kit). I have put rubber grommets in these points.

I have, however, added inertia seat belts as a safety measure. They are Land Rover Defender, rear seat, over the shoulder belts, professionally fitted and MOT passed numerous times. I hated merging onto the M25 at 40mph with lorries thundering past with no seat belt! I have also added an overdrive which acts like a 4th and a half gear improves performance. I replaced the original headlights (candles in a jam jar) with halogen units (keeping the old ones for re-fitting if required).

You could always remove these additions for authenticity if you want to. I have a spreadsheet listing all the work Ive done and a box file full of receipts which I can also pass on. There has been no expense spared and no job put off throughout my ownership. Everything works as it should, I was very fussy about all the gauges and switches etc. Doing what they should to my mechanics annoyance.

The chassis is solid and has been heavily undersealed in the past. The upper vent panel has one spot of rust, which has been treated. I have previously removed the vent panels, inspected and replaced the seals. In the ideal world youd remove, weld and re-fit if you want perfection, but its perfectly acceptable as it is and I can promise its not hiding a whole load of rot beneath the surface. I have a new vent panel gasket if you want to take the panel off/on again. Theres some minor corrosion now showing in the footwells. As a precaution I bought new footwell and quarter panels to replace these as and when needed. These are included in the sale, photos attached. I have applied Metalmorphosis specialist Land Rover rust inhibitor on these areas turning them black (please google if not familiar). The engine runs smoothly and it drives very well if you dont mind the cross between a lorry and a tractor i. If you havent owned one before, beware, no power steering and drum brakes go slowly, drive the vehicle and be careful, its 1974 not 2020! It could do with a fresh re-paint and possibly a new tilt as this one is a bit faded, but I think thats cosmetic compared to the important things; originality, restoration, chassis, rear cross-member, bulkhead, upper vent panel, engine, routinely maintained and cared for. If you want a good one, this is a good one. Twin batteries in series = 24v. The ignition was converted to 12v.

Hate to get rid of it as it will only appreciate in value. I also have all the military camping gear to go with this if youre interested. I have a large collection of 1970-80s British Army gear if you want to move into re-enacting. Im generally only available every other week for viewings, starting 15-21 June here, following week not here, and so on, so please me a message with any questions or to arrange a viewing.
